Research street, lot, and covered parking. Some communities have strict street parking rules, require permits, or limit parking hours. Sometimes permits are available free or at a reduced cost for residents, another important fact to nail down. In the suburban township of Millburn, N.J., cars arent allowed on a street overnight, says Coldwell Banker Residential sales representative Stephanie Mallios. In Roachs area, streets are narrow, making parking difficult. Nearby public lots and garages are often an option but charge monthly or yearly, another fact to have clarified. Fees vary widely. In the Millburn area, there is a 24-hour annual resident parking fee of $300 for some buildings and in certain municipal lots if you dont have a driveway and garage, Mallios says. In Salem, Mass., garages charge an average of $50 a month, while in Chicago the monthly costs generally range from $200 to $250 in the Lincoln Park neighborhood to $300 to $400 in the Gold Coast. Lazarre found a public garage a half-block from one clients home that has staff who would also wash the car and warm it up before needed on cold days. “The key is to have a [parking] solution less than a block away since few want to walk” farther than that, she says.
Related Companies, a real estate firm based in New York, has had a pet-friendly policy since it opened its first building in 1986. The company distinguishes itself by offering wax and booties to dogs at all its buildings in winter, and its MiMa building on New Yorks West 42nd Street has a separate dog terrace with a pool in the shape of a bone. Seven years ago, Related established its first Dog City location, providing pet care services for clients concerned about their pets well-being when they werent home. They offer baseline services, such as nail clipping and access to special play areas and pet clean-up space, for a yearly membership fee of $250. Spa services, walks, puppy nannies, veterinary care, and socialization services are provided in packages and on an à la carte basis. Director of Operations Leya Ogihara says the company looks to tailor offerings “with bespoke attention to each individual dogs needs.” She notes that Related Companies is currently developing a program that will specifically cater to cats.
